Götterdämmerung

The term Götterdämmerung is occasionally used in English, referring to a disastrous conclusion of events <-- from wikipedia.

Wow - I don't normally read this kind of fic, but fide-et-spe recommended it to me. Brilliantly done, a lightness of touch and that building of events that no-one has control over, and not a hurtling to a conclusion, but a slow, sure and steady path.

"I am Ianto Jones, and this is how I roll" - he's wonderful in this, so much making peace with his past, and looking to a future which he has something very important to do, and doesn't shy away from it, but accepts it and just gets on with living his life the best way he can - and refusing to put up with Jack's shit but also accepting Jack's explanation - such trust and love and deep understanding.

Doom is in the job description with Torchwood, but what I love about this story is, yes, our hero dies, but will have had a long and full life, and dies having saved the earth. Many more adventures for the Captain and the Tea Boy between the now and the then.

Jack, oh Jack. My heart breaks for you. You killed the man you love, and you didn't know it. Being your stoopid self, and reading that damn book... urk! Why can't you do as you're damn well told!!!!

Cursed by knowing the future, and also doubly cursed by knowing that when Ianto heads off to save the earth, you will never see him again. But still willing to help Ianto hone his skills, to be with him - a noble act. Jack you ARE bigger on the inside. The agony of the knowledge this for the next few decades; what a weight to carry, and what a factor which will bear on their relationship - can Jack or Jack and Ianto's relationship bear that pressure?

Thank you - I've rambled on enough now!
